The Metropolitan Museum’s Annual Costume Gala is one of our favorite red carpet events here at theSkinnyStiletto. It’s one of fashion’s biggest nights of the year, and the gowns are usually quite dramatic. We were SO excited for this year’s theme: “Punk: From Chaos to Couture,” but ended up so disappointed in how few of the attendees actually participated in the theme! We expected high-street mixed with the classic elements of punk: plaid, leather, studs, fishnets, Mohawks, safety pins, and lots of jagged tulle. (Then again, the whole basis of “punk” subculture was meant to be low-end or discarded, so the fact that it has bled into couture is kind of bullshit.) Our best dressed choices were the following: Julianne Hough (pictured, top right) wore a strapless, gray and black spiderweb tulle TopShop dress, spiked Giuseppe Zanotti heels, and had her blond locks up in lots of black bobby pins. Edgy and adorable. Tommy Hilfiger and wife Dee (pictured, top left), were definitely the best-dressed couple in red and black tartan. Dee completed her look with leather evening gloves, studded mismatched belts, a faux mullet, and spiked heels. They looked like they walked straight out of London’s Camden Town (where this editor purchased her 
own favorite punk-inspired plaid and tulle dress – bought right off the street during grad school). Christina Ricci, who’s always been kind of dark, with Gothic turns in The Addams Family, Sleepy Hollow, and even Casper, rocked the theme, of course, in a Vivienne Westwood plaid gown, platform heels and a fishnet stockings, but added couture with Old Hollywood hair and Harry Winston diamonds. We saw a lot of criticism of Diane Kruger’s lace Chanel column gown, but we liked the sheer dress, dark eyeliner, and her pink hair! Two of our favorite girls – Jennifer Lawrence and Sarah Jessica Parker (pictured, below), wore two awesome headpieces: Parker matched her print Giles Deacon ballgown with a “Punk Couture” Mohawk hat by Philip Treacy, while Lawrence wore a birdcage veil by Jennifer Behr that added to her retro look by Christian Dior. Although we don’t love Miley Cyrus’s haircut, she definitely went all the way with the theme! Same for Nicole Richie, and Anne Hathaway, who went much lighter and funkier with their locks. Mad Men‘s January Jones and Jessica Pare, along with Ginnifer Goodwin, wore the best makeup, by not being afraid to shun their gorgeous 
looks for going all the way with punk eyeliner and shadow! I don’t know how “punk rock” Blake Lively’s gown was (pictured, bottom right), but she stunned, nevertheless in a Gucci Premiere dress of feathers and organza that could have been straight out of Black Swan. Taylor Swift had another stunning J. Mendel gown on (pictured, bottom left), and shockingly, a little pink in her frizzy hairdo. Definitely a fan of her updated red carpet looks lately. And finally, the worst-dressed of the night? Honestly, anyone who didn’t at least try to honor the Gala’s theme. Our editors expected so much more from edgy girls, like Marion Cotillard, Chloe Sevigny, and Emily Blunt, who were all kind of blah. Kate Beckinsale, Zooey Deschanel, Heidi Klum, Emmy Rossum, and Dylan Lauren all wore attractive dresses, but were just so mainstream. But the worst-dressed? Possibly Kim Kardashian covered in… what was that – floral drapes? But Gwyneth Paltrow was the worst of the worst, due to her horrible attitude. She showed up in a hot pink Valentino gown, with simple hair/makeup, and was quoted as saying, “I think we’re all a bit old to dress up punk,” and that the evening, “sucked.” Real classy Goop.
